UAE’S cultural agenda

I remember when I was still in kindergarten that my mom went on a trip to Dubai. For anyone living in Bulgaria at that time (the early ‘90s!) going out of the country was a luxury. But going somewhere as far as the UAE seemed like heading to another world. So you can imagine my excitement when, twenty-something years later, I was invited to visit that same fantasy destination.

In December, I had the privilege to speak at the first fashion, design and technology conference, Echo in Dubai, and spend a couple of days in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The time definitely wasn’t enough to experience everything the cities have to offer but here are my recommendations for where to go and what to see if you only get there for a long weekend.

This recommendation might not surprise anyone, but there’s a reason why the skyscraper is one of the city’s top spots. The world’s tallest building is a true wonder and a shining example of international cooperation, symbol of progress and an emblem of the modern, dynamic and prosperous Middle East. You will learn a lot about the history and symbolism of the building while you’re making your way to the top of the 125 floor as well as some interesting facts (Did you know that Burj Khalifa’s design is inspired by the Spider Lily?).

Aside from a stunning view of the city, the Observation Decks of Burj Khalifa also offer a unique aerial view of The Dubai Fountain. If you’re at the top between 6pm – 12pm try to catch the fountains’ musical performance, which will leave you in awe.

One of the up and coming areas in the city, aiming solidify the importance of design and the creative industries for the economic wellbeing of Dubai (and the Middle East). The neighbourhood is a wonderful place where creatives can live, work, play and showcase their talent to a global audience. The D3 is surrounded by a number of cool galleries, quirky architecture and cute cafes. There are also regular fashion, design and educational events and workshops for anyone – from pros to beginners, kids to adults.

This is such a hip café with an irresistible menu selection! Created by the style savvy for the style savvy, all of Gossip’s food and drinks are almost too pretty to eat. Almost! I mean, just look at their Rose MilkCakes, Power Lattees and Rose-raspberry and Charcoal Ice creams. Just remember to take a snap before you dig in, okay?

Base Dubai

When it’s time to let your hair down, head to Base. Located in the D3 area, Base is an electric open-air club, which hosts not only some of the world-class DJ and artists but also unforgettable entertainment such as fire acrobats, dancers and much more! The experience under the night sky is really much more like a festival than your standard club night.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

Set aside half a day to visit the spectacular Louvre in Abu Dhabi. The city is only an hour drive away from Dubai, so will be a shame to miss the opportunity to see this architectural wonder. Opened to the public in November 2017, the museum hosts four temporary exhibitions per year, curated by thirteen French museum partners exclusively for its visitors. The overarching theme and vision for the Lourve Abu Dhabi is the intersection of nations and their influence on culture and art.

Perhaps even more stunning than the art is the building itself which leaves you truly breathless. Developed by Jean Nouvel, one of the most significant architects of the last half-century, the home of the Lourve is a floating silvery dome of light and shade. The environment is incredibly inspiring due to the clash of all natural and man-made elements – sea, sun, art and architecture. Try to be there when the sun sets to see the ‘rain of light’ – an effect created as the light passes through the perforations in the dome.

While this is nowhere close to an extensive list, my time in the UAE was truly inspirational. I came back to London so energised, happy and curious for more. Can’t wait to visit again!
