Chasing the sun in Palma

One of the greatest things about living in Europe is the diversity of the old continent. No matter where you are, you’re not more than a few-hours flight away from a completely different country, culture, history and people.

My most recent travels took me to the gorgeous city of Palma de Majorca. Having spent a few days there I can safely say it’s one of the best spots for both relaxation and partying.

I chose to stay in the family-run Amic Horizonte, which is particularly close to the port of Palma. The location is quite special. Amic Horizonte is actually on a quiet hill area just outside the centre, with striking views of the city and the Mediterranean. It also makes the perfect backdrop setting for their health treatment and massage rooms. Uh oh and did I mention the hotel is also a PokeStop?! That’s right. I could catch ‘em all while soaking up the sun by the pool!

Palma has many stunning beaches and, luckily, a few of them are only a few bus stops away from Amic Horizonte. Cala Major is a lovely little beach tucked away from the hustle and bustle of central Palma. The area has a few bars close by, so if you’re after a relaxing, carefree day at the beach, Cala Major is definitely your go-to place.

I also recommend spending a day at Illetas beach – an exclusive and elegant area of Palma, which the local council claims to be ‘the best address in Spain’. This place really is like a piece of paradise, where crystal clear turquoise waters and golden sands attract sun-seeking adventurers all year-round. I chose Virtual Club as my beach spot at Illetas. This all-day venue is absolutely stunning and located on a solid platform at one end of the sands. There’s nothing better than enjoying the magnificent view on the comfy sunbeds with a cocktail and tropical tunes playing on the background. Virtual’s nightclub is situated in a natural cave so if you’re lucky enough to stay more than a day in Illetas, you know where it’s going down.

Palma is no stranger to a good party and so, there’s an abundance of choice when it comes to lively bars, exceptional restaurants and clubs that keep you dancing till the sun comes up. One of my favourite discoveries was Tirso – a modern restaurant at the heart of Palma, offering high-end cuisine. The essence of their menu is traditional Spanish dishes but each comes with a unique unusual twist, resulting in surprisingly delicious tapas, meals and desserts. Tirso’s open kitchen concept will have you hypnotised by the detail and passion with which the chef Carlos Abad and his team work their culinary magic.

If after a taste of the delicious Spanish cuisine you’re ready to burn those calories dancing, head to the marina, home to some of the best clubs in Palma. Amic Horizonte is in close proximity to the area, which was perfect for a night out. You wouldn’t be surprised to know that I ended up in Pacha, but there are plenty of other choices worth exploring.

Palma, you were incredible! I can’t wait to go back!
