I can clearly remember that growing up, whenever my brother and I wanted to hang out with my dad during weekends, especially in summer, we had to consider one thing: the timings of Formula 1. If we were at the beach together, we’d find a bar for them to watch the competition. If we were at home, they’d both be in front of the TV while I kept myself busy until it was over. It’s safe to say I haven’t been the most enthusiastic about a dozen mega fast cars racing for 2 hours. But I had a complete change of hearts over the last weekend, thanks to Heineken.

I had the pleasure of joining the Heineken team for the global launch of Heineken 0.0 (the first non-alcoholic beer from the brand) in Barcelona during the Spanish Grand Prix. And boy, was I blown away! The weekend was such a fantastic mix of activities and celebrations, meeting fellow media folks and immersing into the world of F1.

Even though journey from London started bright and early (3.30am, to be exact!), the time in the air flew by and soon enough we were enjoying the stunning views from Hotel Arts Barcelona.  Aside from its dazzling contemporary interiors and impeccable service, it’s a perfect location if you’re after those #beachlife snaps. Literally a stone-throw from the best clubs in Barcelona (Pacha, Shoko, Opium) and sports and leisure activities (cruises, beach yoga). Yes please!

After mouth-watering breakfast under the sun, we headed to Circuit de Catalunya for Saturday’s qualifying races.  The track may be only 25 years old, but it has an enviable reputation, not only in the automotive world but in MotoGP, cycling, and athletics as well. In Formula 1, the 4.655 km track shows average speeds a little over 200 km/h with Kimi Räikkönen establishing the lap record holder at 1:21.670, or 205 km/h in 2008. We had the incredible chance to actually take a walk on the pit and get really close and personal to the roaring engines and the cars.

As for our seats? Well… we didn’t actually have seats. We had the absolute pleasure to watch the races from the fabulous F1 Paddock Club - above the F1 team pit garages and right above the action – which made the experience so incredibly special! Besides a stellar view of the race, the Paddock Club is the home of many of the sponsor companies of F1 of the drivers, such as Red Bull, Rolex, Pirelli, and of course, Heineken, and full of F1 memorabilia, unseen collectables and limited edition items. Naturally, I was drawn by the History of the Pirelli Calendar book, featuring images of all calendars since 1963 and accompanies by quotes from the photographers behind them.

If you’re after entertainment, look no further than the Paddock Club. For wanna-be racers and enthusiasts, the Club hosted a number of fun activities such as race simulators, tire change challenges and even a VR driving experience. It didn’t take long for me to realize I should never be allowed to compete in the F1 after trying the VR experience. Art and music also pair up nicely at the Paddock. A crew of surrealistic entertainers were around on Sunday to make our stay even more extraordinary, while DJ were spinning the decks, somehow managing to beat the roaring sounds of the engines on the track.  A day in the Paddock Club is a full day of activities from morning to dusk and sometimes beyond.

Throughout the weekend, we enjoyed all types of gastronomic delights too. Everything you can think of., prepared by Master Chefs there and then. From selection of fruit and cheeses, to the most exquisite seafood (lobsters for breakfast, anyone?) all the way through to truffle shots and premium ice cream.

Oh, and did I mention that racers and celebs tend to hang around? We had a fun Q&A session with Max Verstappen – the youngest driver to compete in F1 (he was merely 17 when he started 2 years ago!). When I was 17, I was looking forward to my prom and going out at weekends. Something tells me Max has more exciting things in front of him.

The actual race was an incredible spectacle to watch, especially from The Paddock. The thrill at the start, seeing how the drivers emerge and the crowd rises, the sound of the engines… the energy, anticipation and celebrations!! It really is beyond description. And as I now call UK home, I couldn’t help but feel victorious after Hamilton’s spectacular win!

Remember how I told you I used to keep myself busy while my dad watched the F1? Well… let’s just say I can’t wait to see a race together!  Thank you Heineken for an unforgettable weekend.
